Description

Indigenous people operate within two cultures. They grow up in their home culture within which kinship, links to land and a history living in Australia since time immemorial are highly valued and celebrated. They also have to engage in and live within a non Indigenous culture that encapsulates their culture. It is highly individualised and has values that are often diametrically opposed to those of Indigenous cultures.

During the process through which Indigenous culture has become increasingly encapsulated by non Indigenous culture there has been great pain and loss. This creates a basis for permanent stress in many Indigenous people lives.

The AILC conflict management program examines how stressful contexts can create cycles of conflict. The AILC program then teaches practical ways for managing and resolving conflict.
It does this by assisting participants to:

  • Identify there own conflict management styles
  • Assess potential conflict
  • Consider the conflict situation
  • Carry out strategies to resolve conflict

The two subject program is based on exploration of individuals’ experience, the application of stress management and conflict principles using case studies and practical problem solving approaches.
