The AILC offers three accreditation levels currently – a Certificate II, Certificate IV and Advanced Diploma of Indigenous Leadership. The courses provide a pathway to further qualifications, and the AILC is currently negotiating with universities to allow recognition of the Advanced Diploma to a range of degrees. While the courses differ in content, core training is provided in Leadership, Indigenous Leadership, Representation, Governance, Relationships and Networks, Engagement and Participation, Enterprise and Technology, and Your Leadership. Courses provide places for 25 participants are run in modules (residential and non-residential) across Australia. Courses have also been adapted to specific contexts that participants work within: a Certificate II course has been designed for the Australian Football League for its potential young players; a Certificate IV course has been adapted for family violence workers. These courses are open to Indigenous applicants from all over Australia. All participants undergo a rigorous selection process. The delivery and content of these programs are owned and driven by the AILC. Courses are generally held in Canberra, Adelaide or Sydney. |
The Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre was established in 2001 to foster Indigenous leadership and is recognised as a Technical and Further Education registered provider. The AILC runs accredited leadership courses in metropolitan, rural and remote Australia, with each course being sponsored by a government department, community organisation or the private sector. This allows Indigenous participants to attend and gain leadership skills that can contribute to positive change in Indigenous communities.
