Testimonials

Comments from course participants:

Never in my life have I been able to dine with different people on a daily basis feeling so at ease ... Flowing conversations and no sense of shame. I noticed the more confident leaders in or leadership group never used the quieter ones to self promote themselves; instead there was outstanding encouragement, true leadership quality!

This course has changed my life and it has helped me in more ways then I could have ever anticipated. My family and the facilitators have made it possible for me to break through barriers to discover my potential, not only for my own personal journey, but also as an Indigenous Leader.

From an email received in December 2008:

This leadership course has really changed my life and the direction that I want to go in my life for me and my daughter. I have challenged myself and have come out of my comfort zone during those residentials and I am proud of myself for the path that I am heading..

Graduating with the Cert IV was a big achievement for me and I am looking forward to further my skills in studying (not sure what I want to do) but I am willing to try anything. I have come a long way with my journey and this year has been a really hard time for me as I had no direction at all until this leadership course.

From an email received in March 2008:

After participating in the Indigenous Leadership / Your Leadership course in Perth last November and meeting some really wonderful people, I was inspired to do something that I have put off for many years and that is to get a university degree.

I am currently studying at Curtin University doing the Indigenous Community Management and Development Program (ICMDP). I am studying full time but also working full time - the course has been structured to fit around my work here at DIA. So every couple of months I am required to be on campus for block release and attend class for weekly or fortnightly lessons. The course will be very beneficial for my current role, particularly in terms of learning more about governance and capacity building. There are about 60 students from across the country, including the Torres Strait Islands, enrolled in this course. They are a great bunch of students and I can learn plenty from them.

I recently completed the first block release and that was really full on - I even managed to complete all my assignments on time. I am now juggling work, family and studies and will do so for the next three years. My field support officer is already encouraging me to consider doing postgraduate studies and it’s certainly something to keep in mind.

I wanted to thank [the AILC] for the opportunity to participate in the Leadership course and for inspiring me to finally get my act together and work towards one of my many goals in life.
